Best fragrance notes for strong first impressions

A quick guide to the scent notes that make people lean in instead of lean away.

Citrus, neroli, soft woods, vanilla, ambroxan, and clean musks are the notes that show up again and again when people describe a fragrance as attractive, easy to wear, and expensive-feeling.

For daytime, look for brighter openings with enough musk or wood underneath to stay grounded. For nighttime, add warmth with amber, tonka, vanilla, cacao, tobacco, or resin without turning the whole thing syrupy.

The sweet spot for most people is contrast. Clean plus warm. Fresh plus creamy. Crisp plus skin-like. That is where many of the easiest compliment getters live.
